1. Federal Investigation Into Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner
The Department of Justice sent grand jury subpoenas to Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner’s office concerning potential obstruction of justice in his handling of cases before federal judges. Two sources confirmed the subpoenas.
Krasner first won election in 2017 and was impeached by the House of Representatives in November 2022. The allegations surrounding his impeachment and the current federal scrutiny concern his handling of criminal cases and representations made to obtain relief for convicted defendants.
Allegations against Krasner include false statements, perjury, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy involving murder cases. He is accused of lying to get convicted murderers off death row and obtaining relief through procedural grounds rather than innocence or exoneration.
Krasner is accused of securing outcomes that returned violent criminals to Philadelphia’s streets in 50 instances. Federal grand jury scrutiny concerns whether false statements, perjury, or obstruction occurred in his handling of those cases.
2. Elissa Slotkin And Threats To Prosecute Trump Administration Staff
Democratic Senator Elissa Slotkin is facing accusations of threatening prosecution to scare young conservatives away from working for President Donald Trump. Remarks attributed to her included wanting college graduates considering administration jobs to “think again” and fear that accepting those jobs could destroy their lives, bankrupt them, or put them in jail.
The accusations concern targeting people for serving in the Trump administration, including staff below senior leadership. The alleged goal is to make the personal and financial consequences of government service severe enough that young conservatives refuse to join.
The Trump administration has had difficulty finding qualified candidates and getting people nominated, with prospective employees worried about the consequences of accepting positions. Threats of prosecution could deepen those recruitment problems and leave the executive branch without the staff needed to carry out its work.
A potential future J.D. Vance administration could face the same staffing problem if applicants fear going to prison after leaving government. The concern is that conservatives could win elections but struggle to govern because people are afraid to work for them, undermining effective government and peaceful transfers of power.
3. White House Fraud Whistleblower Bounty Initiative
President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance announced a $25 million initiative characterized as a whistleblower bounty targeting fraudsters and scammers. The initiative would financially reward people who help expose fraud.
The bounty approach would encourage people to report wrongdoing by giving them a financial incentive to assist enforcement. Its stated purpose is to reward action against fraud rather than rely exclusively on law enforcement and the ordinary pace of legal proceedings.
A proposed funding mechanism would pay whistleblower rewards with money recovered or confiscated from people who stole funds. Under that proposal, recovered proceeds would finance the rewards rather than require additional taxation.
Support for the initiative included the argument that government-created bounties could operate within constitutional and congressional law. The broader objective was to use federal authority to reverse government abuses and deliver benefits to citizens.
FINAL WORD
Federal scrutiny of Krasner and Trump’s fraud bounty initiative reflect the conservative demand to punish wrongdoing and protect the public’s money. Threatening young conservatives with prosecution for joining Trump’s administration would make it harder for an elected president to staff the government and carry out his agenda. Conservatives want Trump to use lawful federal power to pursue misconduct, recover stolen funds, and defend their ability to serve in government without political intimidation.
On today's episode of Human Events Daily, I discuss the federal investigation into Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner and the allegations that he made false statements and used procedural challenges to get convicted murderers off death row and violent offenders back onto Philadelphia’s streets.
