• Abdul El-Sayed, a progressive populist candidate backed by DSA-aligned figures including Bernie Sanders and AOC, entered the Michigan Democratic Senate primary polling approximately 15% ahead of establishment-backed candidate Haley Stevens, with results expected the evening of August 4, 2026.
• El-Sayed publicly stated he is not a socialist and describes himself as a capitalist who understands how capitalism works, yet comments from a donor meeting leaked in which he called for DSA-style candidates to primary sitting Senator John Fetterman of Pennsylvania, using the phrase “you put one ogre on a pike and then everyone else gets the message.”
• Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers, a former congressman, is widely expected to win the Republican side of the Michigan primary; an Epic MRA poll showed Rogers handily beating El-Sayed in a general election matchup, while the race tightens considerably against Haley Stevens.
